I usually do my Wonderful Wednesdays every other week but I decided seeing as it’s my birthday and all, to throw a little extra one in there! I had planned a more exciting birthday post but you know, life, study and work happened so instead I’m going for a little gratitude to highlight a few awesome days. This year my birthday really snuck up on me, most years I’m on a countdown from Halloween but this year, well as above, busy busy busy. Suddenly it was like the weekend right before my birthday and then boom, 25. But hey, I feel like 25 will be a good year. And here’s to another awesome quarter of a century.
Early Birthday Celebrations
As my birthday was on a Tuesday this year (a right pain of a day especially when you only have enough annual leave left so you still have to work on the Monday…), so we went out the weekend before with Sam + Geoff for some early birthday celebrations! I’m all for surprises for my birthday so I didn’t know where we were going. We jumped on the tube and ended up at Kings Cross, which is quick becoming one of my favourite places in London to eat.
We wandered over to St Pancras and ended up at the Booking Office bar which was totally gorgeous! I love a good cocktail bar and this is being added to my favourites list. The building is so grandiose and we sat in giant mad men style chairs while sipping cocktails. Ideal.
For food we then wandered over to the German Gymnasium which is somewhere I’ve wandered past a few times and really wanted to try for ages. It’s another pretty spectacular building inside, I’d actually recommend even just going for a drink to see the beautiful interior! I went for the German classic of sausages and just overall it was a really enjoyable evening.
Epic Presents + Birthday Dinner
Paul and my family really do presents well! It’s like our thing. I’m the same, I like nothing more than going out and spending a lot of time figuring out what to buy people and then feeling rather chuffed. Highlights this birthday included the 9 course tasting menu at Pied a Terre from Paul which we are doing this Saturday and I am so excited for it! He also got me a voucher for the Lush spa which is just going to be epic. The parents got me some Bose noise cancelling headphones which I wanted, I am obsessed with them – I literally can’t hear anything with them on which is what I need with all the travel and flights coming up. My sister got me and Paul tickets to Cirque Du Soleil for next year which is so exciting, and I got a new fitbit off my Grandparents.
For dinner on my birthday, we met up with my sister and Callum and went for dinner at Zoilo near Bond Street. It was nice to have an occasion to go out for and the food was really good – even though it is billed as a tapas restaurant, they don’t really do tapas meals, but we made the most of it and shared it anyway!
I didn’t really know what to do during the day as I took the day off but knew that no one else would be able to, what with leave running low and all that. So I decided to take myself out to brunch in the morning. As I really wanted some good avo on toast and to be honest, I quite like brunching alone with a good book every now and again! I headed to Mud in Tooting and had epic avocado and poached salmon. I’ve been reading The Establishment which is reeeeeally good and covers a heap of British political history which I’m not too familiar with, growing up in NZ and all that. If you ever doubt going out for brunch by yourself, definitely do it!
Hache x Holborn
I popped down to the Hache pop up* in Holborn on Monday night for some pre birthday burgers with the lovely Rachel. The burgers were delish – I sprang for the Canadien with the steak burger covered in bacon and melted cheese. It was really good – I haven’t been to Hache in ages and I really rate their burgers. I tried the black garlic hummus too which was super flavourful! They didn’t have much in terms of gluten free options but they did reassure us that they were coming soon. The pop up is only there until the 22nd of December t 95-97 High Holborn so pop down for your burger fix.
This is also the first post I’ve written post Trump and post Earthquake. It feels like the world is hurting quite a bit at the moment and I send my love and positive thoughts to anyone struggling at the moment.
What’s made you happy this week? Katy also wrote an amazing post on 150 things which are making people happy at the moment, be sure to give it a read.
