It’s been a wee while since I’ve sat and given some media recommendations, probably before the blogging break. I thought with us coming up to the cold and grey season, it’s the ideal time to get lost in a good TV show or a podcast to listen to in your evenings. I’ve been making the most of lots of commuting to find a heap of new podcasts so hopefully there will be something you love. Nothing better than lighting some candles, cozying up in a duvet and watching something awesome on a cold winters night.
Crazy Ex Girlfriend
This was one of those shows which I really wasn’t sure about. Then I listened to Rachel Bloom on the podcast My Dad Wrote a Porno, and she was hilarious! I then figured I should give this a go. I had been watching a heap of serious dramas and documentaries so I was in dire need of something light and addictive which is exactly what this is. It’s actually a musical series, but the songs work really well in the story line, usually to explains some hilarious situation. It’s all about Rebecca Bunch, a New York lawyer who moves to West Covina in order to try and get back together with her teenage ex boyfriend.
If you need something which will give you a chuckle, is really entertaining and gives you a bit of something to fill that ‘glee’ shaped hole in your TV schedule, then you need to get onto this one ASAP. Can’t wait for season two!
Now to the opposite side of the spectrum, Black Mirror has returned! Black Mirror is a show created by Charlie Brooker which generally looks at dystopian futures based around new technology, like virtual reality. Each episode is a totally different story but they are generally a bit depressing, so be warned! The series was produced on channel 4 but has now moved to Netflix and a season of 6 episodes. I do like the new series but I think the older ones were better, and they are now all on Netflix to binge on too. Definitely start at the beginning and work your way through – one to make you think!
I’m not gonna yap on about Mr Robot as I have done previously, but we have just watched season 2. I’d say season 2 is definitely different to season 1 and initially I thought it was soooo slow. But it did pick up and by the end of the season I was totally hooked and ready for more. If you enjoyed season 1 then definitely give it a go and persevere past those first few odd episodes.
I’m gonna pop this one on here as I did enjoy it. I wasn’t absolutely obsessed with it like it seemed many people were but it is still a good watch – centering around a small town in the 80s. Suddenly some children start disappearing and it turns into quite the sci fi show with telekinesis and the ‘upside down’. Some of the characters were a bit annoying (looking at you Winona Ryder) but it’s only 8 episodes so it is definitely worth a watch. It can also be a bit jumpy so be prepared for that – big blanket and someone to cuddle is advised.
Not a series but a one off documentary which covers the case of Amanda Knox. If you haven’t heard of it then it was an American woman who was accused of killing her flat mate in Italy and was initially convicted of it before it was overturned. It was a really interesting watch as I was aware of the case but I was in school so never followed any of the details. How she was treated in the press was totally crazy and I couldn’t believe how weak the case was against her.
It’s the typical Netflix doco in that it was very enthralling and packs it all in within the time. I enjoyed that it actually had Amanda Knox herself as you often see TV shows covering cases like this but without any key people involved – you got it all from her perspective! A good one if you don’t want to embark on a series just yet.
This has been an interesting one. It’s a short series, with about 7 episodes and then a few little ones interspersed. It tells the story of a woman from Melbourne who was killed after falling down a garbage shoot from the 12th floor. Although it doesn’t come to any conclusions, the whole case seemed rather odd, with her having drugs in her system and it being rather hard to get into the shoot without any help. It’s more of a news style rather than like Serial but it’s still really addictive listening and has made me ponder.
Bad with Money with Gaby Dunn
Totally different to a lot of the other podcasts I listen to, this one is hosted by Gaby Dunn and is about money and how to deal with it in the modern world. The first few episodes are about her relationship with money as a creative and even visiting a financial psychologist. The recent episodes tend to be interviews, usually with some inspirational women about their relationship with money and what we should be doing with it. I’ve tried some personal finance podcasts and they are all a bit dry but this one is really entertaining and just something people don’t speak about enough. It’s already inspired me to be a bit smarter with my savings!
Another cracker from Gimlet this year is Science Vs. It’s hosted by an awesome Aussie and it pitches fact against fiction. Each episode they take a topic and see whether the science stacks up against it, from antidepressants to attachment parenting to zika, it is so interesting. Plus I love science, but even if you don’t, it’s quite the laugh to listen to and I guarantee you’ll learn something!
My Dad Wrote a Porno (S2)
Nothing even to say about this one, you should know it by now! Season 2 has just finished and it was a right cracker. Definitely give it a listen.
There we have it, a few options for you to watch and listen to this cold winter!
Do let me know what you’ve been enjoying, I have a lot of flights this season and I will need things to keep me busy!!
