JC Chats: How I finally got into exercise
I wanted to write this post aaaaages ago. Before the whole blog break. But then, the break happened and then another little mini break happened. I wanted to write about it before I somehow accidentally fell off the exercise wagon. But you know, it’s now been almost 5 months of working out every single day. Yep, that’s right. Every, single, day. Boom. I feel like I finally figured out some trick that was being hidden. I finally get exercise.
There’s two real key aspects here, and they aren’t rocket science. The first, find something you enjoy. The second, figure out how to actually keep on doing it. It seems simple, but it did take me years to find out that perfect sweet spot between the two. In addition to this, a friend of mine suggested that I start using a weight management supplement with my workout routine. She even showed me a few nucific bio x4 reviews. At the time, I thought it was a great idea, and I was meant to talk to a nutritionist about it, but my break happened, and I lost track of everything. In the end, I decided I was okay with just my exercise routine and my groundbreaking secrets!
So let’s start at the top.
Find some exercise you enjoy
I have tried all of the exercise. Seriously. When I was young I sprang for netball and then fencing. I had a quick foray into gymnastics but that didn’t go anywhere. I tried tennis, I tried badminton, I tried rock climbing. I finally decided to join the gym and spent many a miserable day on the cross trainer. I ran. I walked. I biked. I swam.
Everything. And don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy some of it. But it just became a chore eventually – it was such an effort to give up an evening in order to do whatever activity. I soon realised that the best way to get me to do exercise, was to make it the easiest thing in the world. As in, I am too lazy to leave the house to exercise. I really am. So I went back to an old favourite – the work out video.
Now, a few years ago I got reeeeally into Jillian Micheals and it was the fittest I had ever been. I tried once again to get back into it, but eh, the videos were way too repetitive. Fast forward a few years, it was time for the explosion that is youtube. From having 5 different videos which I would rotate, I could now likely watch a different video every single day for years. Just what I need to keep me interested.
And you know why I love working out at home? I am always busy. We know this. Now I can fit in exercise whenever I need it. I can wake up 30 minutes early and do a quick HIIT workout. I can get home late and crawl onto the fitness mat. Sometimes I do my workout in my PJs. Sometimes I sleep in my workout gear so I can literally get up and do exercise straight away. I don’t have to pack a bag. I don’t have to worry about where to shower. I just do it. I exercise in the lounge at home, next to the bed in a hotel room, in a tiny square bit of landing when I’m staying at a friends. All I need is a tiny space and boom, done. Personally, I just like to do a quick workout. I know some of my friends would prefer a whole home gym, but I don’t seem to use that much equipment. One of my friends actually does have a home gym in the backyard. He just contacted one of the companies offering steel buildings iowa and then bought some second-hand gym equipment. Now he has a home gym. That’s actually a good idea. Maybe I’ll consider that in the future. I probably wouldn’t buy a whole bunch of equipment though because it can take up quite a lot of space. I’d probably just buy one bit of equipment like a treadmill from one of the recommendations from somewhere like Trusted Treadmill.
The videos I’ve really been enjoying are the ones from FitnessBlender. They are simple, but man they do work. And I love that the hosts actually get tired as they do it whilst I’m dying on the floor. I don’t think I’ve been this strong before and I feel like I can still challenge myself. My favourite thing is that they have some little programmes you can buy – it’s only about £8 but it gives you what work out video you should do every day in order to get the result you want – whether it be fat loss, strength gain or hitting a particular area. I’ve done 2 four week programmes so far and they are really effective if you aren’t sure what you are doing.
I tend to mix these up with a bit of Yoga with Adriene for my rest/recovery days. As she is my spirit animal and makes you feel better no matter what kind of average day you are doing. Shout out also to pop sugar fitness which I throw in there every now and again for something a bit bouncy.
Right, so I’ve found something which works for me and my life. How do I actually keep up with it?!
Figure out how to keep doing it
I think there were two reasons why I made this work. First came in the form of health. I know that at the moment I’m young and mobile, but it finally hit me that in twenty years, I’m going to be much happier if I had been healthy in my younger years. It would just be the worst to wake up one day and regret making the most of all that time. I want to live until I’m old and grey, and doing some exercise is the answer!
But, that’s all well and good but I need to actually do it. I really find working out everyday is the answer for me. I think when I was trying to do more like 3-4 times a week, I would always put it off – make the excuse that I’d do it tomorrow until there was no more days left in the week! And it’s about figuring out balancing it out – yes I will exercise every day but it’s not like each day is a big cardio sweat fest. For those days when I really can’t be bothered, I just do a little bit of gentle yoga and then at least I’ve ticked the box and ready for the next day when I’ll probably feel a lot more energized. At the end of the day it’s all about what you prioritize, if you prioritize working out everyday then you’re going to do it.
So there we have it, my current exercise epiphany. I feel like I’ve got this bit down. I just now need to figure out the healthy eating bit next! I try to always have a protein shake before or after workout time because I know how important it is for building muscle. Adding some berries or bananas is also a good way to reward myself with something tasty, but without undoing all my hard work.
Tell me, what exercise do you love? Do you have any little tricks or tips for getting back into fitness and exercise?
PS these snaps obv aren’t me, but you know, I don’t fancy a photoshoot mid workout!
